My Precious Mornings

It isn't always easy waking up early, but I love my precious mornings. I love my GIRLS, too, and they are more precious than anything to me. But they require every single bit of my attention.

Here's a short list of "normal" things that happened yesterday: I found pen marks on one of our expensive armchairs (have not yet tried to remove it, afraid I'll make it worse with water stains). Put a bandaid on an invisible foot boo-boo -- now the knee hurts. Cleaned up spilled water from a baby bathtub filled with princesses. Camille fell down a few steps, biting the inside of her cheeks as she bumped down. We had a lunchtime diaper incident and we'll just leave it at that. Dealt with meltdowns as we discovered we lost a jelly bracelet (found it), left our snack at the gym childcare (gone forever), didn't get to press the garage door button, didn't want little sister to touch her Legos. And that's all within about a two hour span.

Coffee time! #morning #coffee #quote:

So my quiet mornings are wonderful. Coffee. Computer. Candle.
Sometimes the computer is fun (blogging, reading blogs, Pinterest, meal planning)
Sometimes it's just necessary (returning emails, paying bills)

I've also been enjoying podcasts a LOT recently, and when I'm home on my wifi connection is when I like to download a few episodes at a time. Up And Vanished. I Do Declare. And my newest obsession is Nancy Grace's crime podcasts. They are short and she puts up with nothing. Nothing!

I listen to the podcasts in the car (some are really only suitable for when Camille's not around). It's honestly a great break from the Frozen soundtrack. I should start trying to discover some calming, empowering ones to listen to in the morning as well. If you have any recs for a podcast that would fit the bill, I'm all ears!

  1. I listen to a lot of podcasts since I have a long commute. My favorite is Modern Love (based on the NYTimes articles; amazing stories of love, not necessarily romantic love..grab the tissues),but I also like This American Life and Criminal.

  2. The Big Boo Cast is great - two sweet Southern women who discuss anything and everything that comes to mind. They're hilarious!

  3. If you love the real housewives (or anything Bravo) I highly recommend Bitch Sesh. It's SOOOOOO funny. I listen to it when I'm walking through my neighborhood or around downtown and I always laugh out loud, so I'm sure I get a lot of stares.

  4. Elizabeth Gilbert has a podcast called Magic Lessons. I've only listened to the first one but it was about doing what ignites your soul while being a mother. It was really great for creatives! Will be listening to more for sure.

  5. Try a Mr clean magic eraser on the ink!!

Also Big Boo cast is sooo good. Just casual southern girls (Mississippi and Texas) and they talk about everything. Lots of clothes and makeup talk.

  6. I love 'Happier' with Gretchen Rubin. She wrote the Happiness Project and Better Than Before and it's a great way to focus on little ways to take care of yourself!

  8. Try regular old rubbing alcohol for the pen...my nephew drew allllllll over my couch with a pen and the alcohol took it out relatively quickly. Just blot with a cotton ball and keep. Letting away until it is all gone.

  9. Not exactly calming or empowering, but Who? Weekly is great brain candy. (I think we may live in the same part of town, so if you should happen to see a lady walking down the street with a dog and/or toddler and snickering to herself...it's probably me, listening to Who? Weekly. Don't judge.)

Also in neither category you requested, Marketplace produces some great podcasts that make me feel smarter for having listened to them -- but I'm also a weirdo nerdy Marketplace evangelist, so I feel compelled to plug it to strangers on the internet.

  16. Totally agree that we all need a little quiet time, even if we are just getting things done. I love Young House Love's podcast, but that is pretty much the only one I get around to listening!

  17. Oh gosh my earlier morning started at 5:25 when a train whistle woke up the 2 year old and she could not fall back asleep. Of course it was after a night when the baby hardly slept at all. And around 5:45 said two year old decided to wake one of her brothers. There was an unplanned trip to Caribou this morning after the bus picked up the oldest two (and its BOGO today). Quiet time sounds so nice right about now.

  24. More on the "nerdy" sid, but I love Radiolab an NPR production about almost anything; Sawbones, a goofy medical history/comedy show done by a wife (doctor) and her funny husband; our six year old loves Brains On, a kid's science podcast from NPR that your girl's might like in a few years. Good luck with the ink stains, I'm having the same problem with a newly upholstered chair. If you find that something works, I'd love to hear it!

  25. It has a ton of cursing so it's an alone time listen but Crimetown has me hooked. It's about the mafia in Providence, RI (I know, it sounds super dangerous) but it has made me gasp at parts and laugh during others- it's quite a story! I also love Criminal (Start with 'Melinda and Judy') and Mystery Show (the Belt buckle episode had me in tears). Happy listening!
