Make Your Own Frosé

You know how you order something out at a restaurant and you pay a ton for it, because there's no way you could make it at home?

I am here to tell you that you, too, can make your OWN Frosé at home. And it's not hard! And certainly not expensive!

(the first few steps -- freezing your rosé and making an
infused simple syrup -- will be best if done at least
a day in advance -- so take that into consideration!)

You're going to start off by freezing your rosé. Pour a bottle into a Ziploc freezer bag, close tightly and toss in your freezer. My favorite rosés are more of a light orange in color (not really the darker pink ones). I laid my freezer bag of rosé across a frozen lasagna so it would freeze in a flat layer, speeding up freezing time a little.

Now it's time to make a strawberry simple syrup. Slice some strawberries -- maybe 5 or 6 berries. You can use fresh or frozen strawberries. I used frozen and sliced them right out of the freezer. In a mason jar, combine 1/2 cup sugar and 1/2 cup water. Microwave it for 90 seconds, and then stir together. Add in some sliced strawberries when it's hot and bubbling.

Let this concoction sit until it's a beautiful bright pink color. You can leave the strawberries in.

To make your Frosé, add the frozen rosé to a blender and add in 4 tablespoons of the simple syrup. Blend together until it's a beautiful frozen concoction.

Pour in glasses, add in a straw, and top your frosé with some of the sliced strawberries from the simple syrup. Enjoy! This would be so fun to serve on Wednesday for July 4th festivities!

A Simple Twist on Premade Margarita Mix

Popping in for a quick moment to share an awesome cocktail you may want to try this weekend. Or, tonight! :)

We have a VAT of premade margarita mix in our fridge. The bottle is huge. It just tastes so generic, so I've been experimenting around with ways to snazz it up a bit.

Last night I muddled some fresh blueberries at the bottom of a glass with a small dash of simple syrup. On top of that muddled goodness, I added a shot of tequila and ice and then filled it up with the mix. The mint from our yard added a nice minty flavor to this blueberry lime margarita.

So very easy, and you could sub different muddled fruits and herbs for different tastes. A rosemary peach margarita maybe? Or a cilantro pineapple margarita!?

Bottoms up!

Muddled Blueberry Moscow Mule Recipe

You may know by now that I have a weakness for a creative cocktail, and when I was given an opportunity to try out the Arctic Chill muddler, I was all in. This muddler features a stainless steel grip with a grooved nylon head.

I'd been looking for new twists to the traditional Moscow Mule recipe, and this Muddled Blueberry Moscow Mule was definitely a winner. Fresh blueberries muddled together with half of a lime, topped with lots of ice, blueberry vodka, and ginger beer -- so refreshing, and easy to make.

Muddling is an easy way to take a cocktail up to the next level. Muddle fruits like berries, citrus wedges, watermelon -- herbs like thyme, mint, rosemary -- or even kick it up a notch with a muddled jalapeno slice or hot pepper. I will definitely be muddling some fresh jalapeno slices in my next margarita. Cocktail possibilities galore!

For this particular cocktail, I followed this recipe:

Muddled Blueberry Moscow Mule
makes 2

Blueberry vodka
One bottle ginger beer
Small handful blueberries
One lime
Ice

Slice your lime in half and use a citrus squeezer to add the juice to each copper mug. Toss the hull of the lime in each mug. Add in blueberries to each mug and use your muddler to muddle, muddle, muddle all of those great flavors together. Top each mug off with 2oz. blueberry vodka, half of the bottle of ginger beer (which is non-alcoholic), and enough ice to fill the mug. Done!

Now it's time to concoct your own!

Can't find ginger beer? Amazon has a 4-pack from Sur La Table for $8 (here).

Sur La Table Fever-Tree Ginger Beer, 4 Pack

Moscow Mule copper mugs are also on Amazon, both of these options are Prime eligible too!

Set of 4 16oz. mugs (available here)

Set of 2 16oz. mugs (available here)

The citrus squeezer I love is this one. I like it because it's a 2-in-1 and does lemons and limes.

I also am a huge fan of my electric juicer, a wedding gift that we use all the time!

Happy muddling, happy cocktailing! Cheers!

Honeycrisp Apple Sangria {Revisited}

This time last year I was almost three months pregnant, so honeycrisp apple sangria was off of the weekend menu. Well ... it's back. :)

I once followed a recipe for this drink but now I just sort of eyeball it. Today you'll be getting the "eyeball it" version of the recipe!

As a base, I used a pinot grigio. I wanted the wine to pick up on the flavors of the honey and cinnamon sticks, so a heartier wine like an oaky chardonnay may not have worked as well as a lighter one, in my opinion.

I felt sort of skeezy uncorking the wine at 7am on a Saturday morning, but the longer you can let it sit, the better.

In a large pitcher, I added the wine, some honey, a few dashes of peach schnapps, honeycrisp apple slices and cinnamon sticks. The skeezy feeling crept back as I was adding alcohol to alcohol, but don't worry, you'll cut it with seltzer before serving which will bring the alcohol content back down to a non-skeezy level. :)

So after that all sits all day long in a pitcher with those delicious fall flavors "mingling", you'll wet the rim of your glass with water or a lemon slice and invert it on a saucer holding a mixture of cinnamon and sugar. Don't be tempted to skip this step, it's the best part! Then just pour in the sangria and top your glass off with some apple slices and seltzer water to get it nice and fizzy.

You can use plain seltzer water or a flavored seltzer ... I found this grapefruit and lemon version which gave it a really nice flavor.

So that's it! Fall in a glass.
Cheers!

Mocktail 101

Let's talk booze.

When the warm weather hits, I'm all about some cocktails on the patio. Like this:

This season has been a little different ... in a booze-free way. But that doesn't mean I don't still love a little patio sittin' and sippin'!

Mocktail 101
Pin It!

I wanted to share with you the basics of putting together a pretty mean mocktail. Whether you are with child, the evening's designated driver, not an alcohol drinker by nature, or just looking to cut out some empty calories, mocktails can be just what the doctor ordered.

Here's what you need to put together a mocktail as good as the "real thing."

-1-
Pretty Glassware
I think the glass makes all the difference. Some nights are red Solo cup nights; some nights are girly stemware nights. I have some very thin and delicate glasses that are hand-wash only (Ian's favorite ... HA) and they are my go-to for cocktails. You can see one of the styles in the photo above with the pansies. Also, don't forget a fun swizzle stick! I found a pack of hot pink flamingos as seen above from the Dollar Tree. Also, a rock candy stick is a really cute stirrer.

(FYI, the adorable Mr. & Mrs. lowball glasses are from Furbish and they are only $22 here. Really cute gift idea for a bridal/wedding shower, anniversary gift, or just for ME - sooo, let me know if you need my address, wink wink)

-2-
Basic Non-Alcoholic Mixers
I love the Stirrings mixers (you can find them at some grocery stores, TJ Maxx, World Market, Homegoods) because they make drinks so darn easy. Flavored sodas like the blood orange San Pellegrino are also awesome. And of course you have the standards -- pineapple juice, cranberry juice, limeade. Regardless of what sort of juices you add in, you need bubbles! This is where the sparkling water or club soda come in. You can mix a juice and a bubbly half-and-half, or to taste.

-3-
Special Garnishes
This is what makes a drink a COCKTAIL. Some of my favorite additions are cucumber slices, citrus slices, or fresh herbs. I also love making homemade simple syrups using herbs like dried lavender. Frozen blueberries are awesome for keeping your drink cool. And while you could certainly go with fresh lemon slices, how cute are the candied lemon slices? One of these on the rim of a class would be so darn fab.

You can bet I'll be enjoying a mocktail this weekend with the good weather we are expecting. Cheers!

Five On Friday: Cocktail Countdown

Happy Friday and thank you all SO much for your amazing comments on yesterday's Coffee Talk post. I loved reading about everyone's thoughts about those times when things just don't click—and how you get through them. It's normal, one hundred gazillion percent normal. And isn't it just refreshing to know we are all in the same boat?

For today's Five On Friday, I am going to break tradition and do a themed post ... I have cocktails on the brain (six weeks but who's counting) and maybe it has to do with the warmer weather and the thought of cocktails on the patio, but I've been salivating over my Cocktail Me Pinterest board recently!

Here are my top five cocktail wishlist recipes for patio sippin'.

Moscow Mule #lulugracevintage #belvedere vodka

O N E
Moscow Mule. It seems like everyone started loving these after I was already pregnant. So I missed out on the Moscow Mule boat. I steered clear of them before ditching liquor because I mistakenly thought they had bourbon in them. That I just can't do, but vodka? Oh yes madam.

Lavender Collins Cocktail. Not only are these beautiful, but just about anything with lavender in the ingredients has my full attention. You can find the recipe here for these delicious and pretty cocktails. Please don't be scared off by the idea of making a lavender simple syrup; it's way easier than you would think. If you can boil water, you've got this, mama.

This sparkling blueberry lemonade is spiked with St. Germain (elderflower liqueur).

apple and pear white sangria

F I V E.
Apple and White Pear Sangria. I'm known in my extended family as The One Who Provides The Sangria. Which is not a bad title to claim. Find the recipe here for this light and refreshing sangria recipe. And remember—red sangria may be tasty, but on a boat, it can be a recipe for disaster. Stick with white and you're ready to crank up the speed!

Happy weekending to you and yours -- and I'm curious, if you were ordering one of these cocktails from a menu tonight, which one would be your choice?

Drinking While Pregnant

Today's post, contrary to the title, is not about boozing it up while with bambino, but moreso the beverage stand-ins for those forty long weeks, and what some of my favorite choices have been!

I'll separate the post into a few different segments:

+ Faking Them Out ("drinking" while keeping your growing baby a secret)
+ Wine
+ Beer
+ Bubbly
+ Mocktails

It goes without saying that there are a lot of things you can drink that aren't even alcoholic stand-ins ... I have consumed my fair share of water, sparkling water, flavored sparkling water, ginger ale, lemonade, herbal tea, decaf coffee and tea, you name it! But -- I have found that in some social situations, it has been so very nice to have a decent non-alcoholic stand-in.

Faking Them Out
We guarded our baby news for roughly 13 weeks. This meant a lot of creativity. We have a really fun and social group of friends, and this "fake wine" concoction that I came up with really was quite a help.

I started off with a box of pinot grigio. Really, any sort of wine with a screwcap will work well here -- we just don't want corks for this project. Pour out the wine (in my case, I just decanted it for Ian to enjoy) and wash the container really, really well. In the photo above, the original wine is in the tumbler on the right. Then, just mix up water with a few splashes of apple juice to reach your desired wine color. You can see that what I mixed in the glass pitcher was pretty spot-on. Funnel back into your wine container, screw the lid on, and then just hope that your girlfriend doesn't ask for a glass!

This was the recipe that I made before our Labor Day weekend at the lake in this post. We had just found out our news the day before, so maybe that's why we looked so happy at the lake that day :)

I posted this photo on that blog post of my "wine" -- and I have to say, it was the perfect stand-in!

The friends we went to the lake with had no idea, and while it did feel a bit sneaky, it was the right move for us. I even used this same fake wine idea when I went over to a girlfriend's house not too long after this lake trip. I finished off the "wine" I brought over, and then she insisted on pouring me a glass from her bottle of red. Uh-oh. I waited until she got up for a potty break to run and pour half down the sink drain, and then I later took a potty break and flushed the rest of it. She later told me she was clueless about my antics. Gotta do what you gotta do!

Wine
There are a few different brands of alcohol-removed wine that our grocery store carries -- Fre and Ariel. Don't get too excited ... these do not taste just like wine. I've tried both of the reds that Fre makes, the merlot and the red blend, and the best way I could describe them is that they taste like wine mixed half-and-half with Welch's grape juice. If you typically go for really sweet reds, you may be fine, but I'm more of a cabernet drinker. They certainly are good stand-ins in a pinch. It was nice around Christmastime to be able to sit around with my family holding a glass of red along with everyone else.

And sometimes, on Friday nights, you've just gotta cozy up to the fire with a glass in hand. :)

Beer
There are a lot more options out there for non-alcoholic beer, and while I still have yet to see non-alcoholic wine on a bar's drink list, you are pretty much guaranteed one n.a. beer option on the menu at most bars.

St. Pauli N.A. is a fairly common one, and I'll drink it, but to me, it has more of a skunky taste and smell.

If you're typically a light beer drinker, regular O'Douls is a pretty easy option and easily found. That's what I went for in the photo below at a bar here in Charlotte.

I think the best option out there if you like a darker beer is the O'Douls Amber. It's very tasty -- a pretty good dupe for "normal" beer.

Bubbly
Sometimes a girl just has to have some bubbly. In fact, when one of my aunts asked me if I was missing wine, I told her it wasn't the wine I missed -- it was the stemware! I love coming home after a long workday and unwinding with a beverage in a pretty glass. Especially a champagne flute. Ours are from Crate & Barrel and I just love them to death.

And bubbles? Just the icing on the cake.

These little Martinelli's single-serving sparkling ciders are very sweet, but they make a fun drink. I topped mine here with some frozen blackberries to keep it cool and add a little flair. ;)

One of the best options, though, that I've found is the Fre Brut. It is no Veuve, but it does the trick!

Fre Wines - Brut

Mocktails
When it comes to booze, there are a million ways you can get creative. If Ian and I are out for a nice dinner, I'll ask for the cocktail menu. The first thing I do is scan all of the drinks and look for creative, non-alcoholic drink ingredients such as simple syrups, fruit purees, and muddled ingredients. Then, I will just ask the waiter or bartender to come up with a non-alcoholic cocktail that includes that ingredient that I want. So, for example, if I see a drink with vodka, lavender simple syrup, mint, and prosecco, I'll ask the bartender to omit the vodka and prosecco and just do the lavender simple syrup, muddled mint, and soda water. I still love having something pretty to sip out of a martini or lowball glass, even if it is void of liquor!

null

Here is a delicious mocktail recipe for Grapefruit Honey Ginger Soda. How delicious does this look? I haven't made this yet, but I'm hoping to give it a shot this weekend.

So there you have it -- my favorite alcoholic beverage stand-ins. And I do have to say -- although I miss my wine nights with the girls, waking up feeling great every morning for the past 31 weeks has been pretty. darn. fabulous.

What are some of your favorite non-alcoholic drinks? If you have been pregnant before, what were your beverages of choice?
