Easy Hair Updo Tutorial

Okay. Hair tutorial.
Let's do this.

Why you shouldn't X out of this post:
+ If you think to yourself "I don't have as much hair as she does"
+ If you think to yourself "I don't have expensive hair tools or hair products"
+ If you think to yourself "I don't have time for a complicated updo like this"
+ If you think to yourself "She mentioned this was day 3 hair. I could never go that long between washes!"

Stick with me and give this updo a shot!

Below is what I have taught myself to do with dry shampoo from Target, TJ Maxx hairspray, six bobby pins, a teasing comb from Sally, and a curling wand from Walmart.

So, round up your materials. If you do have thicker hair than I do, you may need a few more bobby pins. I set my curling wand to 400 degrees and use my Michael Jackson-esque heat glove to protect my hands from burns.

Let's start off by talking about the hair. I wish I had a really cute photo of my starting point hair, but this one that Camille and I took to send Ian while he was out of town will have to do. It was Saturday morning. I'd washed my hair Thursday morning, used dry shampoo in it Friday morning, and so this made a full second day of unwashed hair. On these days, I just shower and use a thick shower cap from TJ Maxx to protect my hair from the water.

Let it be known that I never used to go without washing my hair. My hair is rather thin and got oily fast. It did take a little bit of training, but I think my hair is proof that anyone can get theirs to go more than a day without washing. If you're working up a big sweat exercising daily, though, it may not work for you. See also: you're my hero :)

Out of the shower, I spray the dry shampoo at the roots and run a hairdryer over any parts that got a little damp from the shower. The warm air seems to give it a little extra volumizing boost.

Now, let's get down to business.

I start off by clipping up the top half of my hair (top left photo below). I separate the bottom part into three sections and curl each with the curling wand: left side, right side, and back. You are going to want the curls to curl away from your face (a la Farrah Fawcett), not towards it.

Once the bottom section is curled, I let down the top right and top left sections, curling each of them away from my face. At this point I have reclipped just the top strip of hair -- the mohawk sort of section, if you will.

Top left photo below -- this is that last remaining mohawk section I was talking about. Just to review, I've curled five sections of hair now: bottom left, bottom right, bottom center, top left, top right.

I unclip the mohawk section and separate it into two sections -- the back/crown part, which I'm holding up in the top right photo, and the bangs. I curl each of these, but I only do a verrrry slight curl on the bangs at the end of them.

Then I get that hairspray ready.

Lifting up the top/crown section of hair, I mist it with hairspray and then tease it WELL. Tease it better than you think you'd need to.

I sweep back the right side, sweep back the left side, and criss-cross the bobby pins at the back to create a half up, half down style (top right photo below). Since you've teased the underside, it should be fairly smooth on the top but may need a little bit of smoothing.

Now that the top section is clipped back with a little bouffant pouf, I take the right side of the lower hair and loosely twist/pull it back and pin it near the other bobby pins.

I then repeat this process with the left side of my hair, and then I'm left with just the back piece (bottom left photo). I twist it up and bobby pin it, again, right on top of the other bobby pins. If they overlap well it can really help lock them in place.

At this point you can use your 6th bobby pin to secure any areas that don't feel nice and tight.

You've got a fairly done updo now, but I like to take it to Texas hair at this point.

Grab your teasing brush, and with the pointy end, insert it right in the hair and pull the hair away from the head. This loosens it up a bit and gives more of a bouffant yet relaxed look. I do this on the very top (right behind my bangs) and on each side.

And that, my friends, is my six bobby pin updo.

If you are working with thinner hair, like me, or if you want to ensure that the final style definitely looks big and not too slicked-back, another trick that I sometimes do is this: after curling every section of my hair, I'll flip it over and put a fine mist of spray on my entire head. This locks in the curl all over but it also really helps add volume to all of your hair.

I'd love to see you give this a shot! If you have success with it and Instagram a photo, please tag me (@alizadventures) in it so I can see! Let me know if you have any questions below and I will do my best to answer them. :)

Here's a quick shopping list for you with some of the best prices I've found from various online retailers (Amazon, Walmart, Target). Also, while you may have a favorite dry shampoo, this Herbal Essences one is more texturizing than others I've tried, which is why I'm recommending it for this particular style -- but you may love your own. I'm also including a link to Aerogel hairspray which is a product that we learned about from my sister's wedding hairstylist. It is AMAZING and truly gives a miraculous hold. When I did this updo for a wedding I attended, and I knew I wanted it to last for hours and be dancefloor-proof, I went with that hairspray. I treat it like liquid gold :) (but it's really not that much more expensive than my daily spray!)

Dry Shampoo Showdown ... Herbal Essences VS Batiste

Okay, the time has come ... I am ready to dish out my experience with two dry shampoos I've recently purchased! I've included Amazon links to both, if you are a big Amazon shopper like I am, but each of these products can be found at other retailers.

Dry shampoo is awesome these days. I love knowing that I can quickly shower and apply a little bit of makeup all during Camille's (quick) naptime, and I don't have to worry about spending lots of time on my hair. It seriously saves me about 20-25 minutes daily between shampooing, conditioning, combing, towel-drying, sectioning-off, blow-drying, and styling.

I recently purchased Herbal Essences Naked and Batiste dry shampoos, and after weeks of using them both, here is what I've found.

Dry Shampoo Showdown

Okay, so first up, Herbal Essences Naked. This is a cheapie, but I liked that it wasn't going to break the bank and that it contains no parabens. It has a very pleasant scent, and rarely do I find that it gives me that token white/powdery outcome like many other dry shampoos tend to do. It goes on a little more wet, so I'll often hop out of the shower, remove my shower cap, spray this on my roots, and then run the hair dryer over my head for a minute or so. This dry shampoo gives my hair a much coarser texture. I definitely use it on day 2 hair (which is technically day 1 of skipping washing), but it's my favorite on day 3 hair when I really want to ensure that my hair has body and volume and does NOT look oily. This is the dry shampoo I prefer if I am going to be adding curl to my hair with my Remington hair wand. It really helps to hold the curl.

And secondly, Batiste dry shampoo in Floral & Flirty Blush scent. This is the second can of Batiste I purchased. I initially went for the one for dark hair. That was a mistake on my part. I found that, during the day, I was finding dark brown around my cuticles and under my nails if I touched my hair or head! It made my fingers look dirty. No thanks. I exchanged that can for this Floral & Flirty Blush scent, which is really lovely. I like that Batiste comes in so many different scents. This one does tend to have more of a white/powdery finish for me, so I make sure to hold it as far from my head as I dare when spraying and then brush it out well. This dry shampoo is awesome for day 2 hair because it allows my hair to look fresh but still feel silky and light. If I'm just clipping my hair up with a tortoise claw, braiding it, or (my favorite) wearing it up in a simple topknot, this is the dry shampoo I use.

So, which one is the winner in my book?

BOTH! I think that the combination of these in my bathroom cabinet is perfect for day 2 and day 3 hair, depending on the style I am going for.

I'd love to hear if you use either of these products and if your findings match mine. Dry shampoo, I heart you.

Thursday

On Hair.

I love learning new tips and tricks with hair.

so true

Yesterday morning I had a bit of an "ah-ha" moment. It seems so simple but it honestly did take me nearly 32 years to discover this trick.

I used cool air only when drying the top layer of my hair.

And oh my goodness -- the frizz and flyaways that I typically see on the top of my head daily ... gone! It was so silky and smooth all day long.

So here's the rundown of what I am now doing when I wear my hair straight:

+ Out of shower, spritz hair with Unite 7seconds Leave In Detangler
+ Comb hair out, twist up in thin towel, put on makeup
+ Flip hair over and dry on high heat until 75% dry
+ Clip up top section, dry underside with large round brush with heat
+ Let down top section, dry with large round brush only using cool air only

Not only was my hair so shiny with zero flyaways, but I know it will be better for the health of my hair in the long run as well. Why, oh why, did it take me this long for the proverbial lightbulb to go off?!

Now, if only I can find out how to replicate this hairstyle. This will be my Holiday Hair 2013, mark my words.

cute & easy updo.

The second photo is from Kate at The Small Things Blog and she posted a video tutorial here. I think it's high time that I pour a glass of Ariel and set up my iPad in front of the mirror to give it a try!

If you've got hair tips and tricks, do share! What's your secret to pretty tresses?

Au Naturel ... What Would This Mean For You?

This morning, I heard a noise that nobody wants to hear.  And smelled something that nobody wants to smell.  All signs pointed to the worst -- my hairdryer is approaching death.

It's emitting a screaming-type noise and the smell, oh the smell!  Have you ever singed off your knuckle hair on a candle flame?  Yes, that is the current smell it's putting off.

So it started me thinking -- let's say that it bites the dust tomorrow morning, before I have time to get a replacement hairdryer.  And I'm getting ready for work.  And I just have to "make do."  What would this look like for me?

My naturally curly hair would be unleashed. If you're thinking now, "I've seen your hair curly!  It's pretty!" Well, you are FAR too kind, because that is thanks to the use of a hairdryer to get volume at the top and a hair curler to touch up those uncooperative pieces of hair. So my hair would be sort of wavy from the ears down, completely flat at top, and flyaways all over.

And if we're continuing down the "au naturel" path and we're assuming I'm without makeup as well (this was almost close to being true as I panicked on Sunday thinking that I'd left my makeup bag at the lakehouse), then here's what I'd be working with:

Dark undereye circles
Eyebrows that resemble fat caterpillars with very sparse fuzz
Eye wrinkles
Dark spots from prior blemishes, maybe even a new one or two
Pale, undefined lips
Skinny eyelashes

I don't think I'm being too hard on myself -- I am not at all afraid of going out in public "without my face on." In fact, I love giving my face and hair a break on weekends. But this is my reality, and if you can't laugh at your own sparse caterpillar eyebrows, then it's time to let loose!

Tomorrow morning will be the true test of the hairdryer. Will it magically fix itself tonight, or will it explode into a million pieces around 7:30am tomorrow? I'm getting a little bit of a sweat-stache just thinking about it.

So, I'm curious.  What would au naturel look like for you?

Wednesday

Three Wednesday Lovies

Wednesday is one of my favorite weekdays.  Right smack-dab in the middle of the workweek, we've got the excitement of Thursday (aka, Friday-Eve) and glorious Friday ahead of us.  And being that my fave cardio classes are on Tuesdays and Thursdays, I justify to myself that if I workout on Wednesdays -- yay for me; if I skip a Wednesday workout, it's okay -- I did one the night prior and will do one the night following.

... Rrrright?

Here are some things that have been making my week lovely.

My go-to hairstyle.
It's been hot, rainy, and humid out this week, so a work-friendly updo is perfect for me.  I just braid pigtails with a black hairband at the bottom of the braid only, tie them in a knot at the back of my head, tuck in the ends, and secure with bobby pins.  This chick has thicker hair than me (and that untucked end is driving me a bit batty), but here's the tutorial I used.

Simple produce-based meal planning.
My weekend farmers market jaunts have been stocking us for the week with plenty of summer produce.  Lettuce, squash, corn, a purple pepper, okra, green beans, an avocado, blackberries, strawberries, a mango ... this all came home with me Saturday.  I rely on our tried-and-true sides during the workweeks -- roasted okra, sauteed green beans, salads, squash casserole -- and then just add in an easy entree.  Monday, to go along with our sauteed green beans and parmesan roasted tomatoes, I made Kate's Chicken with Mustard Sauce and we loved it.  Highly recommended!  Last night we had huge Southwestern salads with shredded chicken, romaine, grilled fresh corn, black beans, tomatoes, avocado.  I adapted this recipe from Erin's Taco Salad and followed her dressing to a tee -- ranch (we used light) and taco seasoning mixed together.

Comfy days and evenings at home.
I know this photo has been making the rounds, and it's for a good reason.  I've been enjoying having a simmering pot on our stove so much.  With the recent heatwave, we have been spending tons of time inside in the comfort of our own AC.  May as well make the house smell heavenly!

Today I'm happily linking up with The Vintage Apple -- visit Michelle to see all of the other favorite things that other gals have been pinning on Pinterest recently!

Pink Lou Lou's Messy Side Bun ... Thingy

I can't believe I'm about to post the pictures in this post that I told Pink Lou Lou I would.

Did you see her post yesterday about how to create "the messy side bun ... thingy" as she called it?

After seeing her cute hair that she wore to her friend's wedding, I was one of the people that emailed her begging for a hair tutorial!  I was so happy to see that she gave the instructions on yesterday's post.  I told her I'd take a stab at it last night and maybe, JUST MAYBE, photograph the sequence.

It's embarrassing ya'll.

My mirror self-portraits are ... awkward.

But without further ado, here we go!

{Disclaimer: I did this right before I headed to the gym, hence the non-traditional get-up.  And as a disclaimer sidenote, I stuck a few extra bobby pins in the bun before leaving, and my hair didn't BUDGE during my hour-long cardio class!}

Here we go.  Before pic.

The essentials: Ulta teasing comb, bobby pins, Tresemme hairspray,
curling iron, ponytail holder

I started by lifting a section of my hair at the crown...

... and then I teased the hell out of it using the hairspray
and teasing comb.

Then I did the little side braid of my bangs and pinned it to the side.
The unsure look on my face is because of that huge teased hump.
Not quite sure about it at this point.

Then I did the side ponytail and left out some sections of hair on the
opposite side.  After this pic was taken, I poufed the crown a little more.

Then I just started randomly pinning the hair around the
rubber band to hide it.  Next time I'll use hot rollers and
hairspray on that ponytail first to give it more body.
Using a curling iron, I curled the side pieces away from
my face.  Sorry for the huge finger in the way, I was
hurrying so I didn't burn my hair off!

Finished view ...

Did I do it right Pink Lou Lou??

I think it's cute ... but my bun is too small.  And maybe my pouf isn't high enough??

The pouf does look pretty good from the top, right?

Or does this look silly on me?!
I can't decide ... PLL, help!

OK maybe I'm really digging it from the side.

And from the back version (in mirror) it's pretty dang cute.
Pink Lou Lou, do I get the seal of approval?
Any tips??
