Five On Friday

It's time for another edition of Five on Friday and I do hope you'll join along!

Remember, all you have to do is post about five things on your mind, add our logo (found at the bottom of this post), and join the party using the linky tools below. Easy, and a great way to find new blogs and be found. :)

Know what I've been loving? (Why oh why am I sharing this Snapchat photo here ... it should be lost forever).

The weekly black mask I've been doing. I typically put it on Tuesday or Wednesday nights, whenever I have about 30 minutes to lay in bed and let it work its magic. It's the Revision Black Mask and it makes my skin extremely smooth and dewy -- while promising to remove the toxins and impurities from it, too. It's nice to have something that I do for myself weekly, a little treat. One of our area's best hair and makeup artists (this sweet gal) recommended it, and I was sold.

Last night I hosted supper club, and the whole meal was GREAT. I will share the menu early next week if you are looking for a failproof yet yummy meal plan to serve friends. One of the standouts last night was dessert (even I couldn't resist it). I made my very favorite pie, Chess Pie, and served it with a small bit of salted caramel gelato on the side.

Recently, some girlfriends couldn't believe that I had never seen the show Fixer Upper on HGTV. I don't watch that channel very often, but they promised me that this was such a cute couple that I needed to check out. During Camille's nap yesterday, I watched two of the episodes while I prepped dinner. Y'all. They are such great hosts, such a cute couple, and they have such an EYE for design! I can't wait to watch more episodes and get some great inspiration for our next home!

I have to share this photo because I was proud of my creativity last night! I made Camille a caprese salad of sorts, which was a fun way to mix up dinner. She had sliced grape tomatoes with sliced mozzarella string cheese, drizzled with a little bottled balsamic glaze (our grocery store, Harris Teeter, carries this -- it's their own line, HT Traders). It can be hard to break out of the normal toddler meal ruts, so this was fun for both of us.

Lastly, a little teaser for a new all-natural household product delivery service, ePantry: oh my goodness. I received my first shipment of products this week, and I don't think I've ever been so excited to clean countertops. Normally I'd just pick up my cleaning products at Target or on Amazon, but I've been working on a little price comparison for you and ePantry is coming up ahead of the others. I'll share more with you about my experience next week, but if you want to check it out now, you can use my referral link HERE to get your first $10 in items for free (and new customers get free shipping on their first order)!

TGIF y'all, and hope you will join in on Five on Friday this week! Cheers to the weekend!

My Thursday Confessions

I was so happy to see that my sweet blog friend Jess from The Newly started this new link-up for Thursdays! I always love reading confessions (the really good, honest ones) so here's what I'm 'fessing up to today.

// 1 // I am irresponsible when it comes to gassing up my car. Driving around uber-pregnant with a toddler, in the WINTER, this is a bad life decision. If it's cold or rainy outside, I will skip fueling up and let it get down to 0 miles left. I then reset the trip odometer so I know how many miles I've gone past 0 to try to ensure I don't run out of gas. Yesterday I was almost to 20 miles past that point when I filled the tank. For those of you who never let your car get down to this 0 miles left mark, and for my mom, I know you are horrified right now. And I should be, too!

// 2 // On October 1 last year, I posted about starting to read The Book Thief (here). I started it mid-October. I am, embarrassingly, still reading it four months later, and less than midway through. I used to be a really fast reader and would totally lose myself in books. I miss those days, I miss that free time.

// 3 // Now that Camille isn't taking a morning nap any more, about once a week I legitimately can't find or make the time to take a shower. I use dry shampoo and put on lots of eye makeup so my husband won't know that I didn't shower, for fear that he'll think I'm gross.

// 4 // Turning the former office/guest room into the new baby's nursery (and therefore, having to empty that closet) has made me realize that I keep way too many insignificant things. They are just THINGS. But I have a hard time throwing something away that is not broken or 100% useless. I have also heard people featured on Hoarders express the same sentiment. Anyone have a spare copy of this organizational book you want to loan me? I'll read it and return it to you ... by November or so.

+++++

Alright, I'm going to stop at four confessions. Please don't think I'm a loony, irresponsible, unclean person. Or maybe you do, but that might make you relate to me a smidge more (wink) :)

Hit me up with your confessions in the comments! I love hearing your secrets!

Steals This Week: Baby Clothes & Gear

You may have gathered that I'm a bit of a deal-shopper. It's in my blood. My sisters are the same way, Mom's the same way, you get the idea. We're much happier knee-deep in a TJ Maxx clearance aisle than in a beautiful, swanky boutique.

I love shopping consignment sales and Facebook sales for kids' clothes and gear. I mean ... they wear these clothes for maybe half a year max, their spit-up yellows the collars, they drip marinara sauce down their shirt fronts, their legging knees are covered in dirt, and do we even need to talk about potty accidents? I didn't think so.

In the past three days I have picked up some really adorable items and wanted to share!

Yesterday Camille and I went to Kid to Kid (a consignment store) to look for 2T pajamas for her and maybe some size newborn gender-neutral gowns. We purchased neither of those items on our list. But we did get some super cute dresses!

This is just a cute little Carter's number, but I love the bold print for Camille. It was $5.99!

This Hanna Andersson knit number was a little more at $9.99, but the quality of this line is GREAT and it also holds its resale value pretty well if I decide to sell it.

Stopppp right now and someone please say that Gap has this embroidered tunic in my size as well for maybe the most adorable Mommy & Me beach photos. I really wish that was an option! This top still has original tags attached and was just $5.99.

I love it when I can find outfits with coordinating tops and bottoms. This little pink and green turtle outfit was just $7.99 and it makes dressing Camille SO easy! I can just see her in it now this summer with some little white sandals. And a purse. Oh my lands.

Okay, so this one may be the best deal of all ... your input yesterday on baby tubs was so on-point and interesting! And imagine how happy I was when this bad boy popped up on a Facebook selling group I'm in here in Charlotte for just $5! I immediately pounced on it and scooped it up yesterday afternoon. I'm so glad that I found it for this amazing price after seeing so many of you talk about how wonderful the Angelcare lounger is.

In the event that our baby is a little boy, I've also begun buying just a few boy items. If we have another girl, they will go to my sweet nephew who will be here in May or June! I don't want to spend a lot of money on boy items, but having Thompson to shop for helps to justify it. :)

These little size 3mo pants have embroidered ducks on them and are by Janie and Jack. I got these on a Facebook selling page for $3!

And this sweet one-piece knit number was $5 and was originally purchased from a boutique in NY. It's larger, size 6-12 months, but I just couldn't resist it.

So there are my finds so far this week! I probably need to put myself on a bit of a shopping hiatus ... that is, until the next awesome deal comes across my Facebook feed.

Tuesday

Tubs. Get Excited.

Let's talk baby tubs (I know I've just lost half of you ... I apologize). :)

The crazy thing I remember from being pregnant with Camille is how much time I would find myself devoting to ONE solitary, mundane, silly topic. Like baby tubs. Next thing you know, two hours have gone by, it's wayyy past your bedtime, and you've read just about every single Amazon review for seventeen different brands. You might even be compiling an Excel comparison spreadsheet.

Tubs

I've found the best thing to do here is just to turn to girlfriends. Here are some tubs I've used or had my eye on for the new baby (and YES, a lot of this collage is blue, we still do not know the gender though of our babe!).

1: Boon Naked Collapsible Tub (on Amazon HERE)
This is the tub I borrowed from a girlfriend for Camille. I liked that it could be collapsed entirely to make a shallower tub, or just collapsed on one end to create a sloped environment. When she was too young to sit up, I used the yellow bath sponge shown above in the tub to keep her in place.

2: Summer Infant Newborn-To-Toddler Tub (on Amazon HERE)
This is a tub that interests me due to the sling it comes with. I definitely want some way for the baby to stay safely warm and submerged when bathing. It also has a little motorized shower feature -- I'm curious about how effective this addition is.

3: Primo EuroBath (on Amazon HERE)
Recommended to me by my friend Beth, it is apparently great at keeping the baby held in place so that they can get clean and play at the same time.

4: 4Moms Infant Tub (on Amazon HERE)
This one is the Mercedes of the group but I'm unsure whether it's worth it to spend that much this time around since the amount of time we'll use it is very limited! I love that it has a built-in water thermometer.

5: Angelcare Bath Support (on Amazon HERE)
This too looks like a great option, easy to clean and a softer way of helping the baby's head to stay lifted above the water while remaining warm. Price point is on target and Prime eligible!

* BONUS *
6: Summer Infant Comfy Bath Sponge (on Amazon HERE). I wrote about this amazing (and cheap!) sponge here in this post. No doubt in my mind that I will be purchasing this exact same sponge again for our new baby. It is awesome just placed in the sink when the babies are brand spanking new and really helped me to feel a lot more comfortable bathing little, delicate, newborn Camille.

I'd love to hear from you if you have a strong opinion one way or another on a baby tub! Pros/cons of each style? Did you use a baby tub you just loved? Help me out!

Valentines Traditions

We had a great Valentines Day this year -- quiet, relaxed, and low-key!

Ian took Camille and I out to breakfast yesterday morning at Terrace Cafe. It was one of the few places around us that was open on a Sunday at 8am. We were there by about 8:15 with absolutely no wait. This is a spot that typically has a dozen or so people waiting outside in the cold to get in for breakfast and brunch!

I have been really trying to eat healthily to manage this gestational diabetes, but yesterday I cut myself a little bit of slack. I'm a nut for anything lemon, and they had a french toast entree made from homemade lemon poppyseed bread. SIGN ME UP. Camille's kids plate was huge and included a sausage patty, so I swiped it from her (no shame) to help balance out the carbs with some protein. After an hour, I initially had a reading a few points higher than the limit (120), but I retested five minutes later after drinking some water and moving around and my second reading was in line with where it needed to be.

During the brunch, they even came around with long-stemmed roses for the ladies, and they gave one to Camille, too! It was such a cute touch.

We got back in jammies after breakfast and just enjoyed a very slow-paced Sunday. Here are some other snaps from the weekend...

Saturday, Camille and I worked on a card for Ian. Yes, she has earbuds around her neck. Lady loves thinking that she is listening to music.

Later that day, the mailman came and brought a card from her great-grandparents complete with some "paper money" inside!

We make a really big deal about this to her and always put it straight in her piggybank. I think she's up to about eight dollars now in it. :)

The silly little family tradition we always did that Ian and I are passing down to her is the Valentines Man. Legend has it (at least according to my Mom and Dad), a lightening-fast man wearing a red spandex suit leaves a Valentines goodie at your front doorstep, rings the doorbell and runs away so quickly that he cannot be seen.

So Camille got her little afternoon snack delivered by the Valentines Man yesterday, and she was a little petrified of him ... so Ian worked out a deal with him (wink) and he happened to stop by once more later yesterday, this time dropping off a red heart balloon. I think that two nice visits in one day really helped Camille warm up to him!

After she went down to bed, Ian and I snacked on a little appetizer board (the standout was the brie baked with Kahlua, brown sugar, walnuts, and dried berries) and finished up making dinner.

Ian broiled ribeyes for us and I made sweet potato fries and a spring mix salad tossed with granny smith apple slices, walnuts, blue cheese, red onion, and a homemade lemon vinaigrette.

We did something out of the ordinary ... we sat at the dinner table and talked through dinner :) It was a nice departure from the TV tray we typically share. I think we are going to have to make that a once-a-week goal! Smart small, right? :)

Five On Friday: Happy Valentines Day!

It's time for another edition of Five on Friday and I do hope you'll join along!

Remember, all you have to do is post about five things on your mind, add our logo (found at the bottom of this post), and join the party using the linky tools below. Easy, and a great way to find new blogs and be found. :)

I posted an updated belly pic on Instagram yesterday and thought I'd post here as well. :) I had my 32-week appointment on Wednesday and the baby is measuring perfectly and I'm up around 20lbs. My blood pressure was good and the baby's heartbeat was 135. My gestational diabetes appointment was Thursday morning, and that one also went great -- my nurse was really pleased with my results since I have added some more carbs back in to my diet!

I wanted to pass along this sweet homework assignment I was given at Camille's Music Together class this past Monday. The teacher, Melissa, encouraged all of us to choose a lullaby and sing it to our child before bed each day for the next week and be ready to report back to her.

Seems very simple, but I just chose the very easy "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" and started this with Monday afternoon's nap. Since then, we have not missed a single time of me singing this song to her. We sit in the rocking chair, with her head resting over my belly, and I sing. I have been AMAZED at how much she seems to look forward to this ritual and how calm and serene she is as I sing to her.

So, if you're up for it, I challenge you to end each pre-bedtime ritual with a lullaby for the next week and let me know if your little one responds well!

They had this step-and-repeat outside of the music
class the other day. Check out this diva!

The Lilly patterned hairbows I make have been a huge hit on Instagram! I sell them there (@alizadventures) and here's the batch from last night. I still have two seahorse bows left (the others sold out) if you are interested. Let me know!

I wanted to thank all of you who responded to my post the other day about the fears I have about adding a second child to our family. I certainly am not alone in these fears, and it was so reassuring to hear from those of you who have walked in these shoes and assured me that the way I feel is completely normal. I loved the ideas about spending one-on-one time with Camille as much as possible even after the new baby is here (froyo date, here we come!). And someone else who emailed me personally encouraged me to take as much time in the hospital to really enjoy the new baby without feeling the pressure of splitting time with Camille. I loved that idea and won't be pressuring the hospital staff to discharge us early. :) Ian and I certainly have a lot of help between our eager-to-assist mothers, and we do already have a cleaning service that comes twice a month -- I won't be scared to wave my white flag and bump up the frequency of those visits if need be. I love the advice passed along to me of the love towards multiple children not being divided, but multiplied. Again, thank you all so much for your wisdom and encouragement!

From me to you, Happy Valentines Day! I hope your day is spent reflecting on those you love and those who you know love you.

Turning Our Dining Room Into a Shared Office Space

Do you ever hesitate to make a big change, and then when it's done, you think "why in the world did I not do that sooner?"

That could be the alternate title of this post.

We loved our dining room, and we sat in it to eat a few times per year. Other than that, as I've mentioned before, it often became a holding ground for "stuff."

Here's a basic idea of how it looked -- table, chandelier, beverage station.

And just to paint the whole picture for you, here's how it looked when it was staged to sell when we purchased.

Adding another sweet bambino to this family means needing a new nursery. We had a combo guestroom/office situation going on in a back bedroom which will now be where the new baby will sleep after transitioning out of the bassinet. So, if we are losing our home office, where does it go? Having one is essential in our home, so we decided to turn our dining room into an office.

Here is where I really pushed for two separate desks (I was done with sharing!), and I also really wanted to keep the chandelier in the room. It made sense with this set-up to situate the desks back to back in the center of the room!

So let's take it step by step. First of all, I sold the dining room table. The chairs are sentimental and definitely usable in a future home, so I am using one for my desk and the other three will go into storage.

Secondly, we had a French door installed on the doorway leading to the kitchen. This (somewhat?) helps to keep Camille out of the room when Ian is trying to do some work from home.

I bought the unfinished wood door from Home Depot, and our handyman matched the knob to our other household knobs and painted the door for us after installation.

And a quick note on larger purchases from Home Depot -- don't underestimate the power of going through Ebates to purchase online and pick up in store! It may not be worth it if you just need to pick up a few screws and bolts or a new plant, but if you are planning on spending some dough at the Depot, just purchase your item online and choose the "pick up in store" option. They will do your shopping for you, let you know via message when it's ready for pickup, and have it all ready up at the front of the store for you. Then you earn a percent back on your purchase through Ebates. Crazy easy, right?! This door was $147.00 and I earned back almost $3 on the purchase. Not enough to send me to the mall for a new pair of shoes, but a savings nonetheless, and it was up at the front of the store ready for the easiest pickup ever!

I like having a fairly uncluttered desk, but having these fun gold binder clips and a letter organizer holding bills to pay and a few correspondence cards is really helpful.

Both the binder clips and correspondence cards are designed right here in North Carolina, which is pretty cool. The company is called UPstudio and they carry dayplanners, stationery, calendars, pencils, and desk accessories. A cool thing about the planners, other than the fact that they are 40% off now, is that they let you download a weekly template for free to see if it jives with your style! So smart and a great way to try before you buy.

One neat set of cards they have for any of you Raleigh dwellers or NC State grads is this set of cards designed after the streets of Raleigh. They can be found here.

Everyday Cards - Raleigh Streets

So, for our desks, I wanted something that looked nice but definitely not something that would break the bank. We hope to move to a larger house at some point, and I wasn't sure that we would be able to use these exact desks again in a new home. So dropping $500+ each on them was absolutely out of the question.

I checked out a few of my favorite sites for well-priced home decor and ended up finding these distressed white desks with drawers at Wayfair (found here). The price was great, and I read through a ton of the reviews to make sure that most people were really happy with the product.

I did read that many folks said the time to put it together was very lengthy ... some people taking up to four hours. I'm not even gonna lie, I hired our handyman to put them together for us! HA! Our time is limited, Camille probably would have swallowed a screw or something, and I honestly didn't want to have to deal with the added frustration of desk assembly. Our guy knocked out each desk in an hour and with zero cusswords. Score.

The only stumbling block we hit is that the top of one of the desks arrived cracked in half, but I hopped on the phone with Wayfair and they had a new piece drop shipped to me in no time.

The rug (a years-ago purchase from Tuesday Morning) is repurposed from our old office, and I already mentioned that the chair was already being used in our dining room. I did replace the standard wooden knobs on the desk with matte gold knobs that I bought 50% off at Hobby Lobby.

The gallery wall stayed the same, and I purchased two black Crate and Barrel bookshelves that flank the big open doorway to the living room. They were secondhand finds on a local Facebook group, and I got them for $80 for the pair. We moved the little beverage station that was in the dining room to an empty corner of the living room so that both Ian and I have our own set of shelves. Mine was a little too cluttered to fully photograph this time around -- but you get the idea. :)

So, there you have it. Southern Living and Martha Stewart Living won't be banging down my door begging me to photograph this room at any point soon, but that's okay with me. It's functional, it has made room in our house for a sweet new yellow and green nursery, and it has us sitting under that pretty chandelier every day -- the same chandelier we cut our wedding cake under almost five years ago!
