A Mini-Christmas in Columbia

The weekend before the weekend before Christmas (did you follow that?), Ian and I packed up the car with presents and headed down to Columbia to do a mini-Christmas with my family.  This was the first year in thirty years that I wouldn't be spending the holiday with my folks, and my mom's birthday is also on Christmas Day.  We were really happy to be able to celebrate early and we'll definitely be making this a standing tradition for every other year when we celebrate with Ian's family.

Mom and I decided before the mini-Christmas that Friday night cocktails were definitely in order.  After seeing so many delicious recipes on Pinterest, it had our gears turning.  Mom put together a great cocktail which I'll share the recipe for soon.

The guys are way too macho for girly cocktails, so thank goodness for Dad's homemade rum!  That's right ... he hung up his beer-brewin' boots to try his hand at the hard stuff.  The guys enjoyed a little rum & coke in some highly oversized vessels.

We had an amazing dinner together at our family's table (there's really nothing like going back home and letting Mom take care of you and feed you ... am I right?!) and later that evening, my sister Laura and her husband arrived in town.

We kicked off Saturday morning with presents and we decorated the tree together.

Sharing holidays between families isn't always the easiest, but this was a great solution for us.

It's great to be back to blogging and I can't wait to share more Christmas updates!

New York, New York!

Earlier this fall, when I was in Greenville for Kerry's 30th fête, my girlfriend Kate said to me -- we have this girls trip planned in December to New York, and you MUST come!

After warning her that I hoped she was dead serious because I would totally take her up on her offer, the decision was made ... New York, here we come!

Our friend Kerry booked us at The Roger, which was the cutest darn boutique hotel ever.

We arrived around 1:00 and they were able to get us into our room early.  We all looked around at each other ... this was most definitely a small sign but a great sign that we were in for the type of weekend that would be perfect!

After asking the concierge for lunch ideas, she directed us around the corner to Penelope, which was exactly what we were looking for.  We were able to order a lunch consisting of wine and fancy salads ... bingo.  I got the curried chicken salad and a glass of sauv blanc, and I was in heaven.

Afterwards we shopped in Soho until dark, and then we stopped for a bit at Spring Street Natural for an appetizer to share and a glass of wine.  We'd eaten there during our New York trip in March, so we knew it was good.  And it's right near C. Wonder ... perfect!

That night, we had reservations at Saxon and Parole.  A quick outfit pic near the elevator, and we were ready to head out!

We sat in the back room, which I would highly suggest because it can get a little loud.

Kate and I ordered the same drink ... the cucumber gimlet.  Oh my gracious, was it delicious.

We ended the night with a nightcap at The Crooked Tree, where we also shared the pumpkin pie crepe.  {I'll just let you marinate in that one a bit}

The next morning, we hit the city for some more shopping!

We fueled up first by visiting Friend of a Farmer.  It was my second time eating there -- my friend Kerry and I decided several years ago to cross some items off of our bucket list and do 1) New Years Eve in Times Square, and 2) party in The Hamptons, and we brunched there then.  It was definitely just as good and worth the wait for a table.  Order the Farmer's Special ... you will not regret it.

After brunch, we shopped, shopped, shopped!  Sak's was just as beautiful as you would believe it to be during the holidays.

We also visited Rockerfeller Center to see the tree.  Crowded, yes, but worth it? YES.

Before heading back to the hotel to get ready for dinner, we stopped at Fig & Olive for our tradition of wine + an appetizer before dinner reservations.

We got ready for dinner and snapped a quick outfit picture before heading downstairs to meet a very special person...

Completely serendipitous, but the one and only BLC was in New York at the very same time, and ... AAAAND ... she was staying at the exact same small hotel as us!  To just add to the sheer craziness, the girls that I was with knew one of the girls that SHE was with ... ya'll, YA'LL.  Come on.  Killin' me.

Our two groups merged and we went for a drink at Asellina.  Tons of laughs, tons in common, I am still reeling at the coincidence (do you believe in coincidence?) that had us two friends staying at the very same hotel. (BLC and I first met here and then got together again here

After parting ways for our dinner reservations, we made our way to Sons of Essex, which had a very cool atmosphere and great food.

Back in March, we had our first Beauty & Essex experience, and that was a ton of fun, so after dinner we crossed the road and headed there.  We waited in a looooong line -- what happened to the days when the bouncers would point at my group and pull us in ahead of everyone else?  *sigh*  Time for Botox.  Kidding.  Not really.

First stop: the restroom, where they serve free champagne.

We then made our way upstairs and indulged in one more glass of champagne before calling it a night.  I know ... we sound old ... but for what it's worth, we didn't get in until 2am.  :)

I left early the next morning to start my journey home, but I think my heart is STILL in NYC.  :)

We had an amazing girlfriends' weekend as always, and I can't wait until our next trip!

What To Do With Two Minutes

Today I join in a blogger day of silence.  What I ask you today is to spend the few minutes you might normally spend reading my blog and do one of the following:

*Text a parent to let them know they crossed your mind and you appreciate them
*Email a girlfriend to say you're thankful for her friendship
*Compliment a co-worker when it looks like they could use one
*Call a sibling to see what they did today
*Hug a spouse for ten seconds longer than you normally would
*Tell a child that they are special and important

I'll be back tomorrow. HUGS to all!

My Christmas Wishlist + Thoughts

The Christmas countdown is ON!

We had a very special mini-Christmas this past weekend with my family due to the fact that we'll be celebrating on the actual holiday with Ian's family.  It was awesome ... a true highlight of the weekend.
What are you asking for this year?  I have a few items on my Christmas wishlist, a big change from the old days when we'd go leafing through the Toys 'R Us catalog, dog-earing just about every third page.  A rock tumbler, a fruit snack maker, Barbies galore, dollhouses, Barbie Corvettes ... Santa heard it all.

So here's what I'd love under the tree this year (and two of these items are joint Christmas/birthday items since my birthday is so soon after the holiday).
My Christmas Wishlist

An iPad, a DSLR camera, the 2012 Swarovski ornament, and a fun camera strap.  I promise I've been a good girl this year!

And just to touch on Friday's events...
I know today's post is lighthearted, and I planned it that way because I think we all need a bit of a mental diversion from the sad news, but that doesn't make it go away or stop hurting.

We were enjoying a holiday luncheon at work while everybody else around the world was hearing the news.  I first heard about it from a text from my husband.  It was a moment I won't forget -- and I couldn't help but to feel a bit guilty to know that as I was chatting nonchalantly with co-workers about recipes and holiday plans, families were experiencing such devastating heartbreak.  It's nauseating.  I don't think there is one solitary answer ... gun control, mental illness support, etcetera.  I believe it is a combination of many solutions.  My wish is that this generation of selfishness will somehow repair itself.  Taking your own life as well as those of innocent others ... schoolchildren, for crying out loud ... I just can't wrap my head around this disgusting logic.

We're all hugging each other a little more tightly.
Sending lots of good wishes to all who are affected by this,
April

Pointy Toed Flats

Last night I had the best time at the Charlotte bloggers ornament swap -- recap coming soon!

It was so much fun dressing for the holidays.  The chilly weather definitely called for those suede boots, but what I really wanted to wear was a darling pair of pointy-toed flats.  Which I could not, because a) my toesies would have frozen, and b) oh yeah -- I don't own any yet.  Minor issue.

Today I plan to make a trip to my favorite shoe store, Off Broadway, which is not necessarily fancy, but it never disappoints.  The selection is huge, the shoes are organized well, and the sales are abundant.  A perfect trio.

Pointy Toed Flats

And the links for the pretties above: (sidenote ... those Delman flats better go on sale!)

Hi-Roller:

Nine West Speakup (also cute in patent nude and patent black)

No-Brainer:

Do you own a pair of pointy-toed flats?  Am I alone in my obsession with them?

Our 2012 Christmas Cards

It's always such a thrill for me each year to order our Christmas cards.  Last year I was pleased as peas with how our cards from Tiny Prints turned out (see them here), so it was a no-brainer to use Tiny Prints again this year.  Once I experienced their awesome cardstock quality, friendly customer service, and quick shipping, I was a smitten kitten.

We had this picture snapped of us at my sister Laura's gorgeous rehearsal dinner in September.  I picked out a design that pulled in the green of the rolling hills and also had a look that I loved.  Chalkboard + vintage + floral + sweet message = le duh.

So, I present to you, our beautiful 2012 Christmas card.

Yes, even Drake has a shining role in the card!  Something to bring a smile to peoples' faces when they flip the card over.

As I mentioned last year, one feature I love so much about Tiny Prints is the sidebar filter tool which makes selecting a card a breeze.  For example, know that you are searching for a folded card that will feature five photos?  You can whittle down the selections in mere seconds.  For me, I was seeking a 5x7 flat notecard with just one front photo.  Instantly I was able to customize the search to display just those meeting that criteria.  Love!

Are you sending out holiday cards this year?
