How Often Do You Wash Your Hair?

dry shampoo

Let's talk dry shampoo.

I never, ever, EVER thought that I was someone who could go a day without shampooing. My hair is fine and it seems to get oily super quick. But when I was pregnant with Camille and gearing up for those precious newborn days, when my attention would be on her and not on me, I started training my hair to go without washing every other day. It took a while to get it there, and some days I felt like a big fat greaseball, but it was worth it in the long run. It only took a few weeks to bypass those greasy days.

When I have second-day hair now, I use dry shampoo on the roots and typically wear it up since it feels a little heavier. I've tried a few different dry shampoos before -- Tresemme, Dove, Oscar Blandi, Not Your Mother's -- and I'm still looking for the best one. Skipping the shampoo and the blow-drying every other day is a HUGE time saver now that I am home with Camille. I still shower every day, but I just use a good shower cap to keep my hair dry. And I hope that it will also help to keep my hair healthy over time!

The ones I finished up most recently are these two. Out of them, the Dove dry shampoo was probably my favorite. Out of all I've ever used, the Oscar Blandi probably takes my #1 pick.

I'd love to hear your recommendations ... which one did you love? Which one let you down?

  1. I too go several days without washing my hair. Usually, just every other day…but sometimes wash third day. Depends on weather. I find I can do more days during winter months than summer. My hands down favorite is Batiste. I also really like Psssssssttt. (Yep, that is the name). I find it at CVS.

  2. I tried doing this this summer and I felt so gross the second day. Once I started doing summer school, I stopped because I didnt want to go to work feeling like a greaseball. I wish I could get to the point where I didnt need to wash my hair every day, I'm just not there yet :(

  3. Oscar Blandi and Batiste seem to work the best in my hair. My hairdresser always uses a powder-based dry shampoo, and it definitely works, but I hate the feeling of a ton of product in my hair.

  5. Dry Bar Detox has been my go to for a few years! I have dark brown hair but I get the regular NOT the brunette one! I found the brunette kind left brown coloring on my forehead and hands. I haven't found any other that works as well :)

  6. Water Killer by Evo. My hair dresser recommended it. It smells amazing too!

I tried linking to it before but it didn't work. It's on Amazon! :)

  8. I am the same way! I haven't been able to hold out long enough to make it past the greasy second day stage. Some days when I don't have enough time I've been using this:

  9. I've been through so many dry shampoos! I used to get sample ones in my birchbox that would make my hair feel sticky and gross. I have a fructis that I like (and it's cheap, for days that I don't care all that much!), I love batiste (I hunt for it at tj maxx and marshall's) and I've gotten the Oscar Blandi from those stores as well and like it! (for $10... if I'm paying full price for Oscar Blandi product, I'm not spending it on dry shampoo. I'm spending it on the texture and volumizing spray ( LOVE THAT STUFF SO MUCH!)

  10. I was in exactly the same boat with not being able to go a day without washing my hair, but baby #2 changed that for me! I absolutely love the Batiste dry shampoo. It works just as well as the fancy salon kind, but for way less! The scents are amazing as well. One trick is to spritz a little on your roots the night before a shampoo-less day. I feel like it helps to absorb any oil that may appear overnight. You'll wake up with awesomely fresh hair!

  11. I used Tresemme and then switched to Amika it is a little pricey comparatively-$22 at Sephora, but it is great and smells HEAVENLY-I look forward to non-hair washing days not only for time saving and protecting my hair, but for the delicious smell of Amika. I too have lots of fine hair and it does wonders for 2nd day hair. I also heard spraying dry shampoo on your hair after you've washed/dried also helps to go even longer.

  12. PPSSSSSSTTTTT!!! Works great for my baby fine, super thick, naturally curly hair & doesn't leave Bennie any white residue! :)

  13. I love Oscar Blandi as my favorite as well - but I the sticker shock gets me! I love the Dry Bar version too, but right now I'm testing the Herbal Essence and Suave. Both are just okay, and I definitely can't go 2 days with dry shampoo! I've been going about 3 days washing which is so not what I did pre-baby.

  14. Love Dry Bar Detox and Triple Sec! The Triple Sec is great for styled hair days and the Detox is awesome for extra dirty hair. Also love my old go-to ….PSSSSTTTTT! Fab for on the go - can't beat the price. :)

  15. Pillow Talk by Redkin (I think) is my favorite!! It's a hot pink bottle and sometimes is onsale at Ulta for a little extra savings.

  16. I have tried many and Batiste is my favorite! It doesn't leave the white residue on my hair, doesn't weigh my hair down and smells great!

  17. I feel like I have tried them all (hello, I used baby powder in college! Baby powder and a teasing comb worked wonders! ha!) and Batiste is by far my favorite!! No white residue and it smells GREAT! I would stay away from Suave, it didn't really get rid of the oily-look for me and just didn't hold up throughout the day.

  18. Amika Perk Up dry shampoo - got it in my Birchbox, it smells heavenly and works better than any other I've tried! I've gotten a few other Amika sampled and besides the amazing smell, they all work GREAT!!

  19. I wash my hair twice a week. My all time favorite dry shampoos are Psssst, Batiste Blond (also doubles as an excellent root concealer) and Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray. I think the Oribe would be perfect for your hair. It is pricey but a little goes a long way. And it smells fantastic.

  20. Like you, I wash my hair every other day. I, too, stay home with my son and just can't afford time to wash, dry and style it every day! My favorites are Psssst! and Batiste. Unfortunately, the Dove nozzle always clogs on me, no matter how many bottles I buy! I need to try the Oscar Blandi.

  21. Batiste, by far!! Love the scents too. Also, it is often at TJ Maxx or Marshalls, so I stock up!

  22. I can help you with this one :) I work for Unilever ( makers of Dove, Tresemme, Nexxus etc. ) so I have tried a lot of dry shampoos . The best I have found is Toni and Guy Reboost - in the purple bottle. It's sold at Target, a little pricier but I swear by it

  23. I always wash my hair every other day during the work week. It truly is a HUGE time saver! I use Tresemme but reading everyone's comments I may be switching it up!

  24. I agree with everyone who said PSSSST! It smells great and doesn't weigh down hair. I use it the night before so it soaks in really well overnight. I think the Drybar dry shampoo works better than any other brand, but the smell is too strong for me...really perfum-y. These comments are so informative!

  25. I wash my hair everyday for the most part. Sometimes I can go every other day but I feel like it never looks as good as it does when I wash it. I need to work on getting my hair to the point that I can go more than one day. I use Batiste dry shampoo and it helps for sure. I've heard the Amika one is awesome though.

  27. Dry bar brunette dry shampoo is the best. You can find it at most sephoras.

  28. It's much more effective for me to use baby powder or corn starch. Massage a little into your roots before bed and repeat if needed in the morning. Any whiteness disappears when I brush. Burts bees is my favorite to use!

  29. Klorane all day, every day. I can go up to three days without washing, and I too used to think I needed to wash every day.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Dove is my favorite drug store brand. Oscar blandi is my favorite overall as well.

  31. I've tried several brands and my favorite always seems to be the current one I'm using, lol:) I find it works best for me if I spray it on my roots and then sleep on it... I wake up with it all worked in and tousled waves! I also like wearing it in a big ballerina bun/ messy bun on dry shampoo days because the volume is awesome:)

  32. I only wash my hair once, maybe twice a week. I was blessed with non-greasy hair but I still use dry shampoo to refresh it a bit. Batiste is my all time favorite and I love that you can usually get it at TJ Maxx for less! Moroccan Oil is great also but a bit more pricey. I'm currently using Not Your Mother's because I was out of Batiste and I hate it. Embrace dirty hair! :)

  33. I have been through SO MANY dry shampoos. I get Birchbox which means that I get new dry shampoos to try all the time. The ones I've liked the most have been Klorane with Oat Milk (if your hair gets less oily) or Klorane with Nettle (if your hair gets more oily) and Amika Perk Up. All of these smell great AND work great which is why I've liked them so far!

  34. I definitely need to learn how to train my hair because it gets super greasy and I feel like I need to wash it every day. If I straighten it, I can usually use dry shampoo and get a pony out of the 2nd day. I've used Tresme and currently use Suave - I don't see a huge difference between the two.

  35. Big Sexy Hair is my all time fav.Gives unbelievable volume.

  36. I'm a dry shampoo addict! It takes a solid 30-45 minuets to blow dry my hair and who has that kind of time!? My favorite that i've tried so far is the batiste. I got my first bottle last week and ended up snagging some at TJ Maxx on the cheap since I loved it so much. And all the fun scents make it a total winner in my book!

  37. I use the Batiste one. I like it alot. However, I just tried the Dry Bar Triple Sec dry shampoo and LOVE it! It smells so good and works really well. Also, I find that it rubs into dark hair really really well.

  38. I've been using Big Sexy Dry Shampoo for YEARS, and love it! I can even go 3 days sometimes without washing my hair (it's about shoulder length)! Here's my routine: pull it up in the shower, use the cold feature on the blow dryer all over once getting out, and spray dry shampoo on roots while lifting up with comb. I use a clip to hold my hair back, but let it air dry after spraying for at least 15 minutes before I put any other product or heat on it. Usually put on my make up and then style it!

  39. I really like the Suave dry shampoo - comes in Blonde and Brunette - smells yummy and you can't beat the price!!

  40. About 2 years ago, I trained my hair my hair too- and it's been one of the best things I've ever done. I feel like I have tried every single Dry Shampoo out there (truly!), and BY FAR my favorite one is "Psssssst" (that is literally the name). It is a GAMECHANGER and I won't ever use another one ever again. All my girlfriends swear by it too. I haven't seen it at Target, but I get it at the drugstore and you could always purchase it online too.

  41. Batiste! I tried a couple other ones, but they just left my hair feeling oily or you could see the powder too much. I actually only wash my hair like every 4-5 days ... it's often pretty oily by the end, but working from home a couple days a week means I don't really care what it looks like that last day if the gym is the only place I go. ;)

  42. Don't hate but I only wash my hair a couple of times a week. Like every three days. Wash on Monday night. Style Tuesday morning. Won't shampoo until Thursday night/Friday morning. I have thick hair so mine does ok with this. I have only ever used Tresemme but it isn't my favorite and I LOATHE spending money on beauty products if I am not going to like them. So I will definitely be taking some of your recommendations and checking a few out!

  43. Ok so I'm curious, what do you do if you work out daily?? I get so so sweaty and I couldn't imagine not washing my hair after a hard workout!!

  44. I've been using Amika for months but bought Living Proof P.H.D. Dry Shampoo last night, put it on my Day 3 hair this morning and my hair feels almost like it was just done! :)
