Dry Shampoo Showdown ... Herbal Essences VS Batiste

Okay, the time has come ... I am ready to dish out my experience with two dry shampoos I've recently purchased! I've included Amazon links to both, if you are a big Amazon shopper like I am, but each of these products can be found at other retailers.

Dry shampoo is awesome these days. I love knowing that I can quickly shower and apply a little bit of makeup all during Camille's (quick) naptime, and I don't have to worry about spending lots of time on my hair. It seriously saves me about 20-25 minutes daily between shampooing, conditioning, combing, towel-drying, sectioning-off, blow-drying, and styling.

I recently purchased Herbal Essences Naked and Batiste dry shampoos, and after weeks of using them both, here is what I've found.

Dry Shampoo Showdown

Okay, so first up, Herbal Essences Naked. This is a cheapie, but I liked that it wasn't going to break the bank and that it contains no parabens. It has a very pleasant scent, and rarely do I find that it gives me that token white/powdery outcome like many other dry shampoos tend to do. It goes on a little more wet, so I'll often hop out of the shower, remove my shower cap, spray this on my roots, and then run the hair dryer over my head for a minute or so. This dry shampoo gives my hair a much coarser texture. I definitely use it on day 2 hair (which is technically day 1 of skipping washing), but it's my favorite on day 3 hair when I really want to ensure that my hair has body and volume and does NOT look oily. This is the dry shampoo I prefer if I am going to be adding curl to my hair with my Remington hair wand. It really helps to hold the curl.

And secondly, Batiste dry shampoo in Floral & Flirty Blush scent. This is the second can of Batiste I purchased. I initially went for the one for dark hair. That was a mistake on my part. I found that, during the day, I was finding dark brown around my cuticles and under my nails if I touched my hair or head! It made my fingers look dirty. No thanks. I exchanged that can for this Floral & Flirty Blush scent, which is really lovely. I like that Batiste comes in so many different scents. This one does tend to have more of a white/powdery finish for me, so I make sure to hold it as far from my head as I dare when spraying and then brush it out well. This dry shampoo is awesome for day 2 hair because it allows my hair to look fresh but still feel silky and light. If I'm just clipping my hair up with a tortoise claw, braiding it, or (my favorite) wearing it up in a simple topknot, this is the dry shampoo I use.

So, which one is the winner in my book?

BOTH! I think that the combination of these in my bathroom cabinet is perfect for day 2 and day 3 hair, depending on the style I am going for.

I'd love to hear if you use either of these products and if your findings match mine. Dry shampoo, I heart you.

  1. I haven't tried the Batiste but I will definitely check it out! I love the Herbal Essences myself but I quite frankly do not care for the smell. To me, it smells like some kind of cough medicine. However, it works so well compared to others and allows me to go up to 3 days of not washing which I love! Others I have tried I can only go two days with. I also tried the Batiste dark hair and had the same issue you talked about, however, I did like it so I will give the Batiste you recommended a try! Thanks!

  2. I love the Batiste ... and that is my favorite scent. I always see it at TJ Maxx/Marshalls for around $5-6 and stock up when needed.

  4. The only dry shampoo I've used is Fekkai's Blowout and while I've loved it I've been curious what other goodies work well. This was a fun comparison between two you've been using! Thanks so much for taking the time to share!!

  5. I can't seem to get away from washing my hair every day...and maybe thats because I haven't found a good dry shampoo to help get me through the awkward day. Maybe these will help!!

  6. I have the Herbal Essences one and love it!! Doesn't work as well on day 3 as it does on day 2, I think that's partly because I have blonde hair and I feel like you can tell it's greasy much easier than brunette hair… but I love it! and it lets me be lazy because who has time to dry their hair every day?! not me!

  7. I love Batiste! Right now I'm using the kind in the green/blue/silver can (strength & shine??) and I love the scent! I haven't tried Herbal Essences yet but I'm glad to know that it makes your hair feel coarse. I have super thick/coarse hair so I think I might have to stay away from that one. Thanks for your review!

  8. Thanks! If I need to look presentable I always have to wash my hair but as a sahm I get away with washing it every other day and wearing it in a ponytail. I tried a few dry shampoos and couldn't stand the smell. I'll try these based on your recommendation.

  9. So funny - I've been using the Batiste for dark hair and could not figure out why I have been ending up with dirty hands lately. That explains it! This is my second time giving Batiste a try and I just don't like it. I know I'm in the minority on that - it makes my hair feel gritty. I just got the Macadamia dry shampoo in my latest Birchbox and it smells amazing. I've never found the "perfect" dry shampoo but I think that one is as close as I'm going to get!

  10. I go through a ridiculous amount of dry shampoo and I have never even considered different kinds for different days... Love that idea!!! Have your used the Batiste for brunettes?

  11. I will have to try the Batiste. I've been using Herbal Essences and I don't love it. I have blonde hair and I feel like it doesn't 'degrease' as well as other brands I've tried. I've been just towel drying it though - I will have to try to use my hair dryer and maybe that will make a difference. Thanks for the recommendations!!

  12. This is great, April! I'm looking for ways to cut down on my primping time but still look put together once our little guy arrives in February. Would you be willing to do a quick video tutorial on how you use the hair wand? Your hair always have great waves and curls and I'd love to know how to use this wand. Thanks!

  13. I have tried Batiste, but right now am loving Suave! I am a blonde with fine hair and can't go more than one day, but I use it regularly throughout the week just to give me a little more texture and volume.

  14. I've been using Pantene, but I am not loving it. Does the Herbal Essance make your hair kind of sticky? I used something one time that was GREAT for texture and body, but I could barely get my brush through my hair because of it!

  16. I have extremely fine hair so I use the Herbal Essences dry shampoo on my hair to help grip curls and it's AMAZING. Seriously, I just ran out and I need more desperately!
