Breakfast Hack

For some of you, this might be a seriously l-a-m-e post, and others of you might find it to be an idea you want to try. So this is one of those 50/50 posts. Let's talk about oatmeal.

(see, we just lost a few there)

The girls really like oatmeal in the mornings and I keep it easy with quick prep oatmeal that I can make in the microwave. Camille's favorite is the apple & cinnamon flavor. Char loves every kind of food so she's cool with that too. But I just didn't feel right about giving Charlotte the full sugar instant oatmeal.

SO, I mix equal parts of unflavored, unsweetened rolled oats along with the apple & cinnamon packet, mix in water, and heat for a minute. Done! Split between two bowls.

It cuts the sugar in half, and the girls are none the wiser.

My little monkeys eat a banana every single morning ... we are keeping Chiquita rolling over here.

So, while I know the BEST case scenario would be to have them eating some sort of steel-cut oats with flax and chia mixed in, I'll take this as a win for now because a serving for them now has 50% less sugar. It's the small victories, folks.

Zero grams sugar on the left, 12 grams sugar on the right, so their bowls each contain 6g of sugar.

I promise tomorrow I'll post about skinny white jeans or mascara or something. :)

  1. Hey! Love your blog and might be the only person to get excited about an oatmeal post :) I want to share my life hack if this is what your girls love! I take a big, glass, microwave safe bowl(or pyrex measuring bowl - it has to be big or else they'll spill :/) and do rolled oats with double the water - microwave for 5 minutes. Then I dump in one of those single serving, unsweetened applesauce cups, dash of cinnamon and a stevia sprinkle. Tastes just as good as the packet and the sweetness is natural from the applesauce! Sometimes I'll sprinkle in fresh blueberries or chopped banana too. It might be a little hot right out of the microwave but it cools quickly. Your monkeys are so cute :)

  2. Have you tried the Quaker Oats Lower Sugar instant oatmeal? I do that a lot and then mix some flax seed in it.

  4. Love!!! My girls both love oatmeal too and we often use the flavored packets because #reallife. But just to give you some ideas, we also enjoy using a packet of plain original oatmeal (quick cooking but not flavored/no sugar), throw in the microwave or just pour some hot water from the kettle over, then we add a little peanut butter (flavor, high protein, low sugar content), cinnamon, and a tiny sprinkle of brown sugar. Sometimes we add some mashed up banana too....other times they just eat a banana. I was a fan of the oatmeal post 👍🏻😊

  5. Brilliant, girl! Brilliant!! We do this with juice... we buy the lower sugar juice already and then we mix it with 1/2 juice 1/2 water. Our kids have no idea what they're missing because they've only rarely had the full sugar juice anyway!

  7. I make my own "packets" of instant oatmeal and keep them in the pantry so they're ready to go. Premeasure oats, brown sugar, cinnamon and a dash of salt. You can control how much sugar and it's a much better deal. ;) See, you're not alone...a lot of people like oatmeal hacks. The rest can come back tomorrow for something else. :)

  9. Ahh that is such a great idea ... except I only have Andi - she needs a sibling! haha We get that same great value brand and I mix with whole milk almost every morning and I've never thought about the sugar level (Mom fail!)
