Dirty Dozen + Clean Fifteen

This list tells you the best food to buy organic because they are heavy in pesticides

It seems like my goal of increasing organic fruits and veggies waxes and wanes. Sometimes I'm all about it, and other times I just go for what's easy and inexpensive -- often times that means not organic.

I know we've all heard of the "dirty dozen" and the things from that list that I almost always buy non-organic are grapes, strawberries, blueberries, peaches, celery.

Bananas aren't making an appearance on the chart on the right, but I've read that it's not as important to buy those organic because the peel is so thick and you don't eat it.

What do you buy organic (if any), and what do you buy non-organic? Are you a grocery store girl or a farmers market purchaser? I'm curious to see how everyone does their produce shopping. I know this is a pretty mundane topic, but I believe it has a very significant impact on our daily health.

  1. I'm the same way, sometimes I'm into it, others not. We are making more of an effort as a family to buy organic AND foods that aren't processed. Thanks for this guide on the dirty dozen. Pinned it!

  2. I'm very much like you. I try to buy as much organic as I can but sometimes I just go for the regular less expensive option. I do try to buy my produce at Whole Food or Wegmans because it's usually better there even if it isn't organic than at say safeway

  3. I buy some organic when I can- milk, strawberries, grapes, and I shop at the grocery store.

  4. I use the same guidance when buying produce, and I've gotten much stricter about it since Freddy started eating table food. My biggest thing is the pesticides and waxes, I mean yuck. I enjoy going to Farmers Markets as an activity, but the produce at a farmers market is not necessarily organic - it could be GMO and sprayed with dangerous pesticides. So I usually buy organic produce from the grocery store.

  5. I always buy organic spinach. Onions and potatoes I purchase by the bag (because we use a lot of them) and are usually not organic. Thanks for posting this! Definitely something I will need to keep in mind for future grocery trips :)

  7. We try to buy all our food organic and probably end up with 90% organic/ 10% nonorganic. We buy our produce, meat, dairy, etc. organic and it's definitely a more expensive way to shop. However, it's been really important to me especially since our son starting eating solids a year and a half ago. Plus, I've been transitioning over the last 6 years so it doesn't feel like a huge expensive switch all of a sudden. I think that living in CA helps because we have access to year round farmer's markets and local produce in the winter, etc.

  8. Oh you have to get the Smart Foods Organic Diet Buddy app!!! It makes shopping soooooo easy. I wish I could add images to show you what it looks like. But foods are either red, yellow or green... if they are red you buy organic (and it tells you what chemicals are used on them), yellow, caution, it tells you why, and then green you can buy non-organic. It has changed the way we shop (it used to be all organic). It always tells you about the nutrients in the food which my kids love to hear about. One thing it doesn't include is GMOs. So even though corn is green, it isn't something I'd buy non-organic if I'm avoiding GMOs. We keep meaning to join the Popular Ridge Farms CSA (it's organic and local), but our furnace broke last year just at sign up time so our money went in a different direction.

  9. So odd that potatoes are dirty but sweet ones aren't!

And I find that odd about corn, everything I read says to buy organic and that there is a lot of GMO corm so you have to be really careful what kind you buy. Need to look into that one!

  11. I try to buy the 'dirty dozen' as organic products. I didn't care much before I was pregnant with my daughter (who is now a toddler). Being responsible for the majority of the food that she eats makes me want her to be as healthy as possible.

  12. I always try to eat apples, grapes, blueberries, and strawberries organic, if I can find them! Trader Joe's usually has a pretty good selection. If I can't find them organic, I usually don't buy them. To me, it just isn't worth it! I also try to eat my eggs farm raised and organic, as well as meats and fish, specifically wild salmon, not farm raised. I also look for grains, breads, etc... that are not enriched, because that usually means that the good stuff is taken out, and other things (not natural) are added back in! I've honestly found that it hasn't added up to too much extra expense for me, either! Because I'm cutting out the processed food (chips, etc....that don't fill you up), that definitely helps with the cost! It's definitely worth it!!

  13. I always do try to buy organic produce, and trader joe's and whole foods are generally my go-to options. Recently, I've started ordering a local organic farm produce box, which is pretty awesome! We live in NYC, so it's delivered, but I'm sure you can do them anywhere. It's a box that has about 8-10 organic veggies that are in season. I have started meal planning around whatever veggies are in the box. I also really try to buy organic meat, dairy and eggs. I love seeing how other people do their shopping, too!

  14. I'm like you and go in phases. I try to buy organic as much as possible, but sometimes the budget wins. I do feel better about what we are eating when it is organic, it just gets expensive! I do think paying attention to the fruits and vegetables that are higher in pesticides is very helpful. Thanks for sharing this.

  15. Great tips! I usually buy organic for items where I will be eating the skin... But watermelon and bananas, I just go for what's cheapest!

  16. There is a video with a young girl about potatoes not sprouting because they are sprayed with Bud Nip. You can google it and the product...and it is true! When my son had a science project at school, they were told to bring in an organic potato because the regular ones won't work to sprout!

  17. I buy all of my dairy and meat organic and most fruits and veggies....besides bananas, watermelon, avocados, pineapple, etc... I also buy organic canned tomatoes and any item that's made with corn. I'd say 90% of what we buy now is organic or local. Do you follow Food Babe? It's amazing the things that are allowed in our food these days. Read your labels!! :)
