My "perfect" color ... via Jetting to the Wedding
Here's my question: is it worth the risk of doing at-home?
I just am having a difficult time finding a 2-3 hour block of time to schedule this hair appointment. I don't want to give up any of my precious weekend time with the family, and I don't want to take a half-day from work. What do I really think would be convenient? At-home color while I'm sitting on my own couch, catching up on emails and watching Girls!
So tell me ... have you had luck with this? What are the brands to try (and steer clear of)? If you are a hairdresser, please give me your honest opinion, too ... lay it on me.
I think for some all over dye's it can be worth it but going lighter I prefer the professionals. I have never had it go well at home.
ReplyDeleteNot a hair dresser by any means, but I've had luck with the john Frieda precision foam for all over color. I have noticed it doesn't fade as quickly as others, especially if I maintain it with the toner and a good shampoo/conditioner!
ReplyDeleteOh man, I've always been envious of those who can do it themselves. And i have lots of friends who do. I'd love to do it just to save the money it costs me to do it every 6 wks!! UGH! Good luck! let us know if you do!
ReplyDeleteI color my blond hair every 4-5 weeks with a L'oreal product and have been doing it myself for 10+ years. My hair is long and I couldn't stand to pay hundred of dollars on color per year. I love the results.
ReplyDeleteThe most important part of doing at home color is making sure you have plenty of hair clips to section your hair off. That way you get to all of your hair a lot easier. Having a hand mirror near by so you can check out the back of your hair is a good idea as well!

ReplyDeleteI've had luck with DIY all over color, but DIY highlights didn't work since my hair is so dark. I haven't dyed my hair in a really long time though - L'Oreal stopped making my dye of choice.
ReplyDeleteIf you plan on doing all over, I say go for it with the DIY. But leave highlights for the professionals. Good luck!
I do my own for the very same reason. Its hard enough to schedule a hair cut a few times a year, let alone a color appointment every 6 weeks! I wouldn't even attempt it if I didn't do all over color -- and I only color it because I have to cover my atrocious grey hair! That said, I feel like actually making the time to go to a professional would result in a much better look. I also feel like I get the side-eye from hairdressers for using drugstore color :) But, busy moms have to make sacrifices in some areas and this happens to be one of mine!
ReplyDeleteI'm a big fan of Revlon Colorsilk Buttercream color. Ammonia- free, and leaves my hair feeling soft! I think home kits are good for all over color but highlights may be hard to DIY. Good luck! Can't wait to see what you do!

if you have super super healthy hair, diy can be okay...but i am still regretting doing mine with an at home kit. it did a lot of damage. it's cheaper for a reason!

ReplyDeleteI've heard henna dye is safer for hair and reasonably priced. That might be something you want to look in to.
ReplyDeleteI am a stylist in Raleigh and say no to the DIY :) Reason being is being brunette, you'll need the highlights lifted enough to be out of the "orange" stage. If you wash it too early, it may be too gold, too late it may be too light. If you are to make any mistakes, it'll cost your more precious time and money to have a professional fix it. Totally just my 2 cents! :-)
ReplyDeleteI've never had good experience dying my own hair! To me, it's always been worth the money to get it done professionally, because your hair is one of your most valuable assets!
ReplyDeleteFrom my experience, all over color done at home has turned out okay, but it's always been far better at a salon. I would definitely say commit the time if you want highlights. There is no way you're going to get the highlights you want at home. A toner has to be used on us brunettes lest we become bronze city. I know it stinks to spend time away, but a good hair session at the salon is some great mommy me-time. :) We all need that from time to time. Can't wait to see what you do!

ReplyDeleteI have blonde (highlighted) hair and I recently ordered from Madison Reed, and the results turned out salon quality. It helps you select which color will work best for you after you take a survey about your hair. It shipped pretty quick, came with personalized instructions, and in some cities you can have a stylist come to your home to assist you. In my book, a total win!
ReplyDeleteMy suggestion (as a fellow work from home mom) take work with you to the salon! I work from the salon with my laptop and cellphone! If that doesn't work, look ask around, many stylists work from their home on the side of salon gigs and you can work from home at their house! Win Win! I would never do highlights at home!!
