I like saving ideas to my Dream Home board on Pinterest. Here are some of my favorite inspiration photos.
Kitchen
I do think we're a bit out from considering a move, but I love having the Zillow app on my phone so I can quickly research homes for sale. Yesterday I came upon a gorgeous home for sale right at a stopsign, so I quickly looked it up and saw it was listed for $850k. (!!!!!!!!) Needless to say, that one won't be happening. Not even close.
What's your vote, smaller home in town or larger home on the outskirts?
Hm. That's a hard one! We are close to town but have a smaller home and I'm constantly saying we need more storage space. But if we lived farther from town, I'm sure I would hate living so far away!
ReplyDeleteWe are totally small, older home in the city kind of folks. Our current house is 1800 sq ft, but only 2 bed/2 bath. My 8 and 11 year olds just LOOOOVE sharing a room (I hope you can feel the sarcasm), but we have a huge dining room, formal living room, den, eat in kitchen, and a sunroom off the back... Trading off living space vs. number of bedrooms was our big thing, but we're making it work. Our eventual plan is to buy an old home on a great lot in the city and build new. Perfect compromise!
ReplyDeletegorgeous homes! i'd love to live closer to downtowns if possible.. but i know that i might have to compromise in the future to get the kind of house i want (which would include a front porch and a nice kitchen!) ahh someday! xo jillian - cornflake dreams
ReplyDeleteI love the white everything!! It is completely what I picture in my dream home. We are saving up for our second home currently and are opting for a larger house on the outskirts. I want to have room for my future kiddo to play and then also have storage to hide everything :) Clutter makes me oh so stressed.
ReplyDeleteWe chose the bigger house in the burbs after baby girl came. Varying reasons from more space to better schools and being closer to grandparents helped our decision. I miss some things about downtown but since M works downtown and we have lots of friends who still live there we are there a lot. So for us, the trade off is way worth it!
ReplyDeleteOur rental was smaller (900 sf) close to the university & I loved it! However, we knew we couldn't buy in that neighborhood & would eventually want more space (we were on top of each other as it was). We bought our house just on the outskirts of all the hustle & bustle yet still in the city & for now it works great!! We don't have intentions of this being our forever home & will be moving further out for more house & more land eventually. But, for now our bigger house, bigger lot on the outside of town is perfect for us! The thought of moving & making a new space your own sounds so exciting & fun though!!
ReplyDeleteWe lived in a little house in the city when we were dating/engaged and opted to move to a bigger house in the burbs right after we got married. Don't regret it one bit. It is easy to hop in the car and spend a day or evening downtown, and that's only every blue moon. Were in the house daily of course and I have no idea how we would have made it in the smaller house with a kiddo. We're actually making a play room for her this winter, have to a of plans for the yard, have tons of kids always running the streets around us, safe area, better schools, storage, room to grow. I could go on!
ReplyDeleteThat's a tough call. I think different things work at different stages. Is commute time more important to you than space? For some people it is yes, for others no. Basically, I am not helping at all :)
ReplyDeleteWe are debating this currently! When we choose our part of Charlotte it was the only spot we knew (and in the burbs). While I love our schools and the fact that there is a target and Harris teeter at every turn (and two Starbucks in each shopping center), the traffic is way too insane. It frustrates me daily and I don't even have to drive in rush hour. Because of the terrible traffic my husband leaves before 6 and is home after 7:30. I would gladly live in something smaller closer in! We just have to decide if it's worth giving up our schools!

ReplyDeleteOur home right now is teeny! So looking at those beautiful photos has me drooling over my computer. That kitchen! That bathroom! That PANTRY - my OCD side is in love!!!! I think we'll be in our current home for a while, but it's sure fun to think about possibilities for the future:)

ReplyDeleteWe live in a 2 bedroom 1 bath (me, my husband and step daughter) with living room, dining room and small kitchen - huge yard, basement (unfinished). I sometimes think about buying a bigger house but then that just means (most likely) more money for furniture for additional rooms, more to clean. I feel we really have some equity in the house so we might rather put money into our house to build it up even more. My step daughter is 19 so living "tightly" won't be for THAT much longer. ReplyDeleteRight now, my husband and I are in a small apt. We canNOT wait to get a house with a lot of space and a yard. We're still anxiously waiting to find out where our permanent location will be. I'm all for the bigger house that's further away from the city, but that's how I was raised. I prefer a neighborhood with families/neighbors around whereas my husband likes the larger lots with neighbors spread out (how he was raised). That freaks me out so more than likely we will end up in a larger house, in a suburb neighborhood. Can't wait! Enjoy the house dreaming process though!!

ReplyDeleteYou posed good questions at the end of this post. I am going through a lot of change right now in my life, so much, that I have no idea what I'd like. I know what I eventually would like, which is a beautiful contemporary/modern home by the sea with big windows and high airy ceilings so I can retire in peace. Everything else... eh, no idea! :)

ReplyDeleteI really love our area, but I wish my home was a bit bigger, with a better layout. What I wouldn't give to be able to tear down and rebuild on our lot. Best of both worlds! Now, to win the lottery... :-)

ReplyDeleteWe're in the smaller house in an incredible location. We're always looking (not seriously) but have yet to find something we think we would love more or would be worth moving from the area. I feel ya though, would love just a little more space.
ReplyDeleteI tried to talk my husband into moving to Union County. More land, lower taxes, better schools. But we bought land in South Park to build on.

ReplyDeleteOh my, I am drooling over your inspiration photos! I am in love with white!! I am thinking I'm at the stage where further out with more room would be so great for raising a family. It seems that every month that passes by with a baby, the more toys pop up around the house - so I am totally loving the playroom idea as well! :)

ReplyDeleteI have to say, one thing I love about Charlotte is that you can move "out" of the city, but you can still be relatively close. I can't say that for all the cities I've lived in!
And I'm with you. Nothing beats a pretty white kitchen!
Fellow charlottean here. Currently live in a town home in South Park. When we bought it we knew that we could of paid less for a bigger house in the burbs but would be miserable. We love the city life, the resteraunts and convenence. We are fine having a baby hereand waiting until we an buy in Myers or eastover... It's just so worth it to us
ReplyDeleteWe used to feel that way but we have 3 kids now. Give me the big fenced yard, neighborhood pool and playground, mini van, and bigger house on a cul de sac life. I'm still in denial a little bit but it's so much better for us in this phase of life! ;) There will be no doubt when it's time to move on.

ReplyDeleteWe are debating this at present! When we pick our piece of Charlotte it was the main spot we knew (and in the burbs). While I cherish our schools and the way that there is an objective and Harris waver every step of the way (and two Starbucks in each strip mall), the movement is far excessively crazy. It disappoints me day by day and I don't need to drive in surge hour. On account of the unpleasant activity my significant other leaves previously 6 and is home after 7:30. I would happily live in something littler closer in! We simply need to choose if it merits surrendering our schools! How to Smoke Hash
