Faking It

Faking it.
In the beauty department, we all do it from time to time.
Here are my three top fakes.
And you know I'm going to ask about yours, too.

Faking It

{1} Pearl earrings.
Years ago, I received some gorgeous Mikimoto pearl earrings ... the crème de la crème.  Sadly though, about a year and a half ago, the entire post came undone from one of the pearl studs.  I took it to the jewelry store and had it repaired ... only to have it happen yet again.  At that point, I marched my derriere over to Claire's and picked out a pair of $7.50 pearl earrings.  No more babying my pearls, freaking out if I get hairspray on them.  And this summer at the beach, when the mighty ocean took the back off of my post and swept the whole pearl earring away, I didn't shed a single tear.  Back to Claire's I went.

{2} Plumped Up Lips.
Why involve syringes when you can get amazingly plump lips from a tube of gloss?  Too Faced Lip Injection is amazingly potent.  I like to wear it solo and also layered over other lipsticks.  Three free samples of your choice with the purchase of this gloss using this link.

{3} Big Buns, Hun.
I first bought my faux bun about three years ago at Sally Beauty Supply.  This was before the crazy sock bun craze of 2011/2012 ... but I'm not going to act like I've been wearing it on top of my head, topknot-style, since my original purchase.  I first used it years ago to create voluminous low side buns.  Now, I have hopped on the trend train and occasionally do use it for topknots.  But it's still super cute as a low side bun creator!  For someone with very fine hair, it does a great job of faking the appearance of thick tresses.

So, y'all 'fess up.
Do tell ... how are you faking it?
You can be honest.  I won't tell a soul.

  1. I just recently bought one of the hair donuts and LOVE it! I have thick hair to begin with, but it just makes it looks so much more uniform and "done." I also wear fake pearl earrings. I have a pearl ring my husband gave me before we were engaged that I used to have to worry about getting wet and that was enough for me! Fake pearls it is!

  3. Oh, and PS- I went to an event last night in DC and there were no less than 5 big top knots! You were in front of the trend!

  4. I bought some Sally Hansen nail polish a few weeks ago and I had at LEAST 5 people ask me if it was the OPI "You Don't Know Jacques." It was only $1.50 and it didn't chip at all! That's what I call faking it!

  5. I'm with ya on the fake pearls. I have various pieces from my grandmother, mother-in-law, and the set Rich gave me on our wedding day. Those babies stay locked up only to see the light of day for special occasions. I wear my pearl earrings and necklace almost every day - I'm boring like that - so you can guarantee it's usually a fakey-wakey!!

  6. I hopped on the sock bun trend in the spring with a real sock. I discovered the "donut" at H&M in July and now own three: home, purse and suitcase as it is my go to 'do when my hurr is a mess, frizzy, annoying etc. (I will say I swapped bags for a quick trip to HUMID Puerto Rico last week and was without it, you should have seen me digging around my room for ANYTHING I could use...I almost cut off the arm of a t-shirt!) I also "fake" clean hair with oodles of this:http://www.sephora.com/pronto-dry-shampoo-P254307?om_mmc=Googlepla&_requestid=42976&cm_mmc=us_search-_-GG-_-pla-_-{keyword}&ci_src=17588969&ci_sku=914101 and this: http://www.walgreens.com/store/c/pssssst!-instant-dry-shampoo/ID=prod6042671-product?ext=gooBeauty_PLA_No_Rinse_Cleansers_prod6042671&adtype={adtype}&sst=1403da77-60c7-3249-f212-000038d30554 - swear by them, can rock a blowout 4-5 days.

  12. I, too, am a fake pearl earring wearer. My pearl necklaces though are the real deal. Those are harder to lose.
My other fake secret is that I heavily rely on my dry shampoo to fake a hair washing. :)

  13. Love it all!

I use a lot of the same, but my faux pearls are the oversized, obnoxious ones and I love them. The sock bun I love, especially for Hair Day #2. And my favorite faker - Latisse. Lashes like woah.

  16. I need to stock up on some fake pearls. I, too, had real ones and the post fell out as well :(

I think the biggest thing I fake it with is jewelry, I mean why spend the big bucks when you don't have to!

  17. I have GOT to figure out how to use that donut thingy!

My favorite fake -- hair extensions! I bought hair extenstions about a year ago from a verrryyy sketchy ethnic hair supply store waaaay down Tryon (at the advice of my hair+makeup artist) for my wedding and still throw a few in all the time for extra volume!

  18. Love this post! I love to buy costume jewelry from Forever 21. Even though I have some more precious jewelry, sometimes it's nice to have cheaper pieces for everyday wear.
